A few years ago I fell in love with a distressed shelf from Pottery Barn:

I kinda have a thing for old looking stuff that is all chipped up and worn looking. At the time, I was looking for something to hang above our bed, so I thought that something like this would be perfect.  However, I did not like the price tag.  So I looked, and looked, and found nothing like it at a price I was willing to pay.  I ended up giving up on the shelf idea for above the bed, and made a gigantic picture frame instead.
However, the shelf was still stuck in the back of my mind, and finally one day when I was shopping at a local flea market, I finally found something similar that I loved.  Except it was an entire fireplace mantle.  And it was already all weathered and chipped up.  I've always loved the idea of having a fireplace in the bedroom, so I thought this would be a neat look.  I bought it and brought it home.
After some thought, I decided to insert some plywood covered in wallpaper into the area where the "fire" would go.  The wallpaper is almost a foamy type texture, and it is made to look like old ceiling tiles.  My sister-in-law had used this type of wallpaper in her own projects, and it had looked really neat, so I decided to give it a shot.  My hubby cut the plywood for me, and we put the paper on.  Then, I used some stain to stain it brown, and wiped it off to remove the excess.  He then attached it to the wall for me, and it is now where I have a bunch of our pictures displayed.
